Most of what a trout eats lives under the surface, and this is the kit that fishes there. 108 hand-tied nymphs across eleven proven patterns: classic bead heads, the tungsten Euro patterns guides lean on today, a big stonefly for heavy water, the midge that saves cold days on tailwaters, and the worm and egg patterns trout can't pass up after a rain or during spawning season. Three of each size, #8 to #22.
Picked by a professional fly fishing guide. Every fly in this kit earned its spot on real guide trips: these are the patterns we tie on for clients day after day, in the sizes trout actually eat. No filler flies, no colors that only catch fishermen.
What's inside
| Pattern | Hook sizes | Flies | When to fish it |
|---|---|---|---|
| BH Pheasant Tail | 12, 14, 16, 18 | 12 | The most versatile mayfly nymph there is. Fish it anywhere, any season. |
| BH Hare's Ear | 12, 14, 16, 18 | 12 | Buggy, general-purpose nymph that passes for mayflies, caddis and scuds. |
| BH Prince | 12, 14, 16, 18 | 12 | Attractor nymph with white wings that trout key on in faster water. |
| Copper John, Red | 14, 16, 18 | 9 | Heavy and flashy. A proven point fly that gets a rig down fast. |
| Frenchie (tungsten jig) | 14, 16, 18 | 9 | Modern guide favorite. A pink hot spot and tungsten bead that rides hook-up. |
| Perdigon | 14, 16, 18 | 9 | Slim, heavy and quick to sink. Punches through fast current to feeding fish. |
| Pat's Rubber Legs Stonefly | 8, 10, 12 | 9 | Big stonefly imitation. The anchor fly for deep, fast runs. |
| Zebra Midge, Black | 16, 18, 20, 22 | 12 | Tailwaters and winter. Often the only thing eating when it's cold. |
| Rainbow Warrior | 16, 18, 20 | 9 | Small, flashy dropper that triggers strikes from pressured fish. |
| Glo Bug Egg, Orange/Yellow | 12, 14, 16 | 9 | Trout can't pass up an egg. Deadly in winter, spring and below stocking points. |
| San Juan Worm, Red | 12, 14 | 6 | High, muddy water after a rain, when worms wash into the river. |
How to use it
- Fish two at once. Put a heavy fly like the Rubber Legs Stonefly or a Copper John on top, and a smaller Frenchie, Perdigon, Zebra Midge or Rainbow Warrior 12–18 inches below it.
- Get to the bottom. If you aren't ticking rocks now and then, you aren't deep enough. Go up a size or add split shot.
- Go small in clear, cold water. On tailwaters and in winter, #18–22 midges usually outfish anything bigger.
- Works with any setup: under an indicator, below a dry fly, or tight-line Euro nymphing.
Who it's for
Anglers who want to catch more fish on more days. Nymphs work year-round, in high or low water, hatch or no hatch, which makes this the most reliable kit in the lineup.
